From Stage to Screen

First it was a play. Then it was a short film. Now we’re creating a 10 episode series.

Owners-writers-actors Jeff Querin and Stephen Wayne with Ian Maddox and Kris Kuhlman

Owners Jeff Querin and Stephen Wayne flew out to West Hollywood this last week to visit with a few members of 34 West Film’s creative Team.

Ian Maddox and Kris Kuhlman are a delightful duo AND our eyes and ears on the ground in L.A. (More about them in the months to come!)

What are we creating, you ask?

Here’s the pitch… A zombie outbreak in a 1950’s diner. Think Wandavision meets Shaun of the Dead.

It’s called LOVE POTION and you can view our short film (made during Covid with our “quarantine bubble” AND with the help of Steve’s Dad’s camera!) on our Films tab.

Sure, turning a play into a short film is one thing but how do you create an entire series out of a 15 minute short?

The super-short answer: It was there the whole time.

When we write any of our plays in Charleston, the only way the characters and storyline are captivating is if an entire world of conflict has also been created.

The audience may never know all the details, but they don’t need to know. It’s the difference between watching an ordinary theater play or watching a compelling story with a triumphant conclusion.

LOVE POTION is the first of about 15 sellout, tried-and-tested stories from 34 West being adapted.

Wine Research

What you’re drinking is just as important as what you’re watching!

Writers-actors-owners Stephen Wayne and Jeff Querin

Owners-actors-writers Jeff Querin and Stephen Wayne spend way too much time offstage making sure your moderately priced glass of wine actually tastes great! And making sure it mostly comes from Paso Robles, California (Steve’s hometown!).

The duo travel at least twice a year exploring vineyards (sometimes unnecessarily on horseback!) curating a unique menu of wines for you to enjoy when you see a show in downtown Charleston, South Carolina.

Why go through the trouble, you ask? The answer is simple. The story behind the wine is just as important as how it tastes.

And let’s be honest. Many of us enjoy a Cabernet or a Pinot Noir just the same. HOWEVER, if you knew the Pinot Noir was grown 3 miles from the childhood home of the guy who’s currently on stage making you laugh, it’d make a difference!

And since these two men have a story for every glass of wine and also write every story you’ll see on stage, you could say they’re feeding your body AND your soul!

In conclusion, we’ll leave you with this gem: A great story from 34 West is like a fine wine. Robust, full of flavor and always leaves you smiling!

Secret Weapon

We could lie and say it’s the high-energy shows or the talented actors or bla-bla-bla… but the real hero of the night is our house-made Pimento Cheese. And let’s be honest, it’s the best in Charleston.

Hands down. End of discussion. Drop the mic.

It’s perfectly balanced with a secret spice that gives just a little bit of a kick (kinda like our shows!). With three types of cheeses and a texture that’s not too “gooey” and not to dry, this featured item has become a menu darling for 34 West- and a beacon of light in an otherwise bland, tasteless array of spreadable cheeses in the South.

Of course, we’d love to have a throw down with any of the highly regarded restaurants in town. We’ve challenged Husk, we’ve heckled Harold’s Cabin. Even Doar Bros. across the street remain silent.

It’s your classic David versus Goliath. Obviously, we’re the David in this scenario. We specialize in entertainment, you say. Not food, says they. We couldn’t possibly light a candle to any of the fine Charleston eateries…

And that’s where’re you’d be mistaken, my friend. When they say jump, we say how high. When they go low, we go… you get the idea. Come one, come all. Try the finest pimento cheese you’ll ever have in your life!

After all, what have you got to lose? It’s only cheese.
